Community Outreach: Service Learning
The Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy is committed to community outreach, and with the help of a grant from the Lounsbery Foundation in Washington DC, the DPEA Foundation has initiated multiple successful service learning activities. AVID Tutoring at Local Junior High Schools
Since 2009 DPEA senior students have been tutoring junior high school students in science and mathematics at two local schools: La Colina and Goleta Valley. These classes are organized through the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination). Such tutoring permits high-achieving DPEA seniors to share their passion for learning with younger students interested in math and science, and serve as academic role models. FIRST Lego League Mentorship
The FIRST Lego League is a national program that brings young students (elementary and middle school) to the world of engineering and the excitement of robotics competitions. The students in the program build a Lego robot, which is designed to complete a set of designated tasks. In the Lego League, the students explore the process of engineering design and experience the challenge of building a new machine. In fall 2009, multiple DPEA seniors mentored the Lego League team for Girls Incorporated of Greater Santa Barbara. This current academic year DPEA seniors are similarly mentoring the new Lego League team at Hollister Elementary School. Additional teams are being formed at other local schools, and the DPEA looks forward to helping them! |
