DPEA Computer Science Teacher Kevin McKee Wins Award

Root

DPEA Computer Science teacher Kevin McKee has won a prestigious teaching award! The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) has bestowed him with its Aspirations in Computing - Educator Award.

Mr. McKee is one of 33 high school teachers nationwide selected to receive the award, given to educators for their support and encouragement of young women's interest in computing and information technology. Several of Mr. McKee's female students have won NCWIT Aspirations awards over the years, including one national award winner and 3 regional award winners. Mr. McKee was chosen over 30 other Computer Science educators in the 8 county Central California Region.

Mr. McKee said: "I am grateful for and very humbled by this award. Coming into teaching from the business world, I am aware of the level of male dominance in the technology industry and am excited to do my small part to encourage young women to pursue tech careers. I am very proud of my female students; they are regularly among the top performers in my classes and frequently go on to major in technology related disciplines at the university level. They are truly the reason I received this award."

Student Competition

Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy

The Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy at Dos Pueblos High School, Goleta, CA, was founded in 2002 by physics teacher Amir Abo-Shaeer.

The Academy:

  • Is a highly-competitive school-within-a-school at Dos Pueblos High School.
  • Students

  • Has recently expanded to enroll 100 freshmen per year, from the entire Santa Barbara community, for an ultimate total of 400 students.
  • Is a four-year integrated course of study in physics, computer science and engineering design.
  • Culminates in robotics class in senior year, in which the students design and build a robot to compete on the national stage.
  • Enrolls an approximately equal number of female students as male students.
  • Is run as a small business by the senior students, who learn skills for their future success.
  • Includes outreach and service-based learning to younger students, helping to boost their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

The combination of academics, project-based technical experience and teamwork gives students the competitive edge and true mastery of the skills necessary to enter the workforce and pursue post-secondary education.

The Elings Center for Engineering Education opened its doors to students in December of 2011.
